1st Call for proposals

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract for the 7th ESTD conference, whose theme is:

“The Legacy of Trauma and Dissociation – Body and Mind in a New Perspective”.

What is the legacy of trauma and dissociation? Body and mind in a new perspective – disjointed, out of kilter, like a Picasso painting. Trauma, and dissociation, affect not only the mind and the body, but importantly the relation between the two. Healing from traumatizing experiences requires a new, different body/mind relationship – a person must not only learn to feel safe in their body again but must develop a new body/mind/world perspective, informed by what they have gone through and what they have learned. ‘Legacy’ also refers to history – an issue one is always aware of in Rome. What is the history of our field? What ‘legacies’ would we want to pass on to the next generation of trauma and dissociation clinicians, researchers and theorists?

As such, the themes of the body, body/mind relationships, and history are imbedded in our conference theme. Abstracts would be particularly sought on these themes, but you are welcome to submit abstracts on a wide range of topics relevant to the field of trauma and dissociation. These can be clinical in nature, presentations of research findings, or theoretical proposals.

• Therapeutic issues
• Experts by experience perspectives
• Secondary or vicarious traumatization
• Conceptual issues

Conference presentation formats will include symposia, panels, papers, mini-workshops (i.e., 90 minutes) and posters. Information on each of these formats will be available online.

Submissions should be original and of interest to the scientific, clinical, administrative, policy, or theoretical work of ESTD members (or persons interesting in the trauma/dissociation field). Proposals will be rated on their strengths and limitations using multi-dimensional criteria. Proposals should be well-written, with as few spelling or grammatical errors as possible. They should be coherent, with sentences having a logical and progressive flow. Non-native English speakers are encouraged to ask a native English speaker to assist with these issues.

Information About Submissions

• The deadline for submissions is February 15th, 2019.
• Abstracts are limited to 200 words, with the exception of symposium summary abstracts, which have a 50 word maximum.
• Abstracts must be relevant to and mention trauma, dissociation or attachment.
• All presenters must submit proposals online.
• All presenters must register for and attend the conference.
• Each individual is limited to no more than two (2) submissions, including in the roles of presenter, co-presenter, chair, or discussant.
• We strongly suggest that you prepare a word processing file that contains all of your submission information in advance. This will save time online and ensure that you have a backup copy.
• For those submitting symposia consisting of 3 presentations, we suggest that one person gather all the required information from co-presenters or co-authors ahead of time and be responsible for making the submission. You will need title(s), abstract(s), full name and credentials of each author/presenter, address and email for each presenter, and audiovisual needs.
• The most common reason a proposal is rejected is for an incomplete, poorly written, or unclear abstract, and other failures to follow submission guidelines. Your submitted abstract must be clear, concise, and grammatically correct, and otherwise well-written in order to be considered by the program committee.
• Research presentations should be original contributions (i.e., have not been published prior to the date that you submitted the abstract).
• You will be notified by e-mail about your proposal’s status approximately four to six weeks after the close of the call for proposals.

Skill Level

Presentations must designate the knowledge/skill level required of the participant (i.e., Introductory, Intermediate, or Advanced).

• Introductory: Suitable for all professional participants (including students). Such presentations include basic knowledge, techniques, or skills.
• Intermediate: Requires participants to have at least some work experience in order to gain maximum benefit from the presentation.
• Advanced: Participants require a high level of training and substantial experience in the topic. Such presentations are geared to specialists and to those in advanced stages of their career.

Abstracts of research presentations should include the purpose, methods, findings, and conclusions. Submission of findings is strongly encouraged. Other types of abstracts should include purpose, population, main points to be covered, and conclusions. Research submissions should include three published references.
